Warm weather, cold drinks, all-night-long-parties, I had high expectations for my first trip to Cancun, and for just 30,000 IHG points per night the InterContinental Presidente Cancun was too good of a deal to pass up! Because the main goal of this trip was to visit Chichen Itza, I was only staying a couple of days in Cancun to enjoy the beaches before the trip inland to experience the culture and history of Valladolid. With just a couple of nights, I wanted to make sure I made the most of it.
After a 30 minute drive from the airport ($20), the check in process to the hotel was very fast and easy. I was upgraded to an ocean view deluxe room with my IHG status, and received a welcome gift of cookies and bottled water to enjoy while taking in the breathtaking views of the beautiful blue water 6 stories below from the balcony.
With such a picturesque scene, I couldn’t resist immediately changing to my swim shorts and heading right down to the beach. The beach area of the Presidente is very nice and swimmable, but if you want some variety, you can also walk along the sand to enjoy the beach of whichever resort you desire, as none of them have restricted access due to Mexican law. In Mexico, the 20m stretch of sand along the coast is open to public access, even in front of the fanciest resorts. (This also means that anyone else can be there too of course)
Having already received the welcome gift earlier, I was taken by surprise when I returned to my room after a relaxing swim in the ocean to find a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries! This was above my expectations. There was also a nice hand-written note that had well-wishes, dinner suggestions, and asked if I had any requests.
I enjoyed the champagne and strawberries in the evening before dinner – once again on the balcony with that awesome view, and listened to music coming from the cabana. After cleaning up, I headed out for dinner downtown. From the hotel, the main strip is about 10 minutes walking up the road, or you can walk along the beach as I did. Buses and taxis are also quick and easy to catch if you’d rather skip the stroll.
After a dinner of tacos and margaritas, I spent a little time enjoying the local nightlife which was in full New Year’s swing before leisurely walk back to the hotel to turn in for the night. Between the long day, hot bubble bath in the tub, and the comfortable bed, I enjoyed a great night of sleep. Normally I’m not a big morning person, but waking up to that view from the bed had me in a great mood for the day. Just look at what I woke up to (photo taken from my pillow)!
With the quality of the rooms, fantastic attention of the hotel staff, and the location and price, I would say that the IHG InterContinental Presidente Cancun is an excellent option when choosing a hotel in Cancun. It is one of my favorite IHG hotel locations I have stayed at so far. You can read more about my New Year’s travels in Mexico here.
